Joining Instructions for Students

Outside the PGMCStudents should report to the Undergraduate Centre at 0900 hrs on Monday morning, unless otherwise instructed. There is one notable exception to this; the St George’s Elderly Care Students report to Dr Wallace Tan or a representative from the EC department in the Main Reception area at 0930 hrs on the first day (Monday) of their attachment period and then attend their induction in the Undergraduate Centre later in the day at 1400 hrs.

Deposit Monies for ID badges, Intelikeys

You will be issued with an intelikey which will give access to the Undergraduate Centre; including the computer suite, the common room, the shower room, the locker room and the Library (the Library is not in fact based in the Undergraduate Centre but is located nearby). You will also be issued with an ID badge (which should please be worn at all times) and locker key. These items require a £20 deposit.

NB Deposit monies are forfeited if the items noted above are not returned within a week of departure.

For Final Year King’s and St George’s students only

Seminar Room CIn addition to the above, you will be issued with a bleep. You will be required to pay a £30 deposit for the bleep. For this group of students, therefore, you will need to deposit a total amount of £50. Please note: The bleeps cost in the region of £200 each and must please be returned in good working order on the last day of your attachment without fail. We do not have spare bleeps and if they are not returned, someone from the next intake will suffer as a result.

All deposit money is collected by either Aqsa Ghulab or Diana Mosley when the induction takes place. This can be by cheque made payable to “Croydon Health Services NHS Trust” and supported by a bankers’ card or, alternatively, by cash. If you pay by cheque, the cheque is not actually cashed, but merely safeguarded by Cashiers until the day of your departure from CUH.

Tutorial RoomsRefunds on the final day of the attachment can be collected from Cashiers between 0930 hrs to 1600 hrs. However, you will need to collect your receipt to take Cashiers in good time on the day of your departure. This will not be given to you until you have returned your Bleeps (if appropriate), Intelikey, locker key and badge.

Accommodation/On-call room requests

White Coats/Scrubs

These are available from the Sewing Room on the ground floor of Mayday House at no charge. The Sewing Room is open from 0900 hrs to 1300 hrs.
Please Note: Paediatric and EC students do not wear white coats.

Library

Students  who will be at CUH in excess of 3 weeks will be offered a brief library induction on your first day of attachment.

Occupational Health, Shirley House

Proof of Hepatitis B and TB vaccination is not required as it is deemed to have been provided by your Medical School. We need to know of any health problems you may have which may affect patient care. Occupational Health will be your point of contact for needle-stick injuries.

Catering

The main staff restaurant is located at the top of the escalator leading from the Main entrance.  The PGMC has a modern cafe attached to it which is open at 1130 hrs and closes at 1400 hrs.  There are also some catering outlets in the Main Entrance area, e.g. a baguette outlet and coffee shop.

USBs

The Department of Health have issued a Directive banning the use of unencrypted USB sticks at all hospital Trusts.  To comply with this CUH will implement Port blocking on Monday 15th February 2010.  So, from this date you will not be able to use your personal USB sticks to upload/download any information from any of the CUHcomputers.

However, the Trust  has encrypted USB sticks for staff to purchase and it will be possible for you to purchase an encrypted stick for £13.00 (which is the cost price) from us in the Centre.  This is a non-returnable/refundable cost and you will retain the item for your personal use.  The stick may be accepted in other NHS Trusts as well as CUH.

It is important for you to be aware that any information uploaded/downloaded onto your encrypted USB stick, should you wish to purchase one, will be your responsibility and is governed by the requirement for complete confidentiality, especially in connection with information concerning patient data.

Please sign below if you wish to buy a USB stick and are prepared to protect confidential Trust information at all times, taking into account the Data Protection Act and other guidelines issued regarding the use of downloaded hospital data.

Gym

You can join the Gym whilst you are at CUH, but for a minimum period of six months.  You will therefore need to pay £30 for membership and £20 for a (mandatory) induction.  Please go to Facilities to make the necessary arrangements.

Teaching Programmes

Various lectures/talks take part in the PGMC and you can attend, for example, the Grand Round from 1300 hrs to 1400 hrs on most Wednesdays.

We have three Clinical Fellows: Dr Renju Chidambaran (Medical), Mr Sarantos Kaptanis (Surgical), Mr Priyank Vashishtha  (Surgical) and Adeyemi Johnson (Obs and Gynae), all are happy to support you during your time at the Trust.  You can approach them yourselves or route requests through Aqsa or Di, as appropriate. 

Elearning. 

You will be required to complete H&S and Fire & Evacuation/Fire Safety  elearning modules.  In addition, 5th/Final Year students will be asked to complete NPSA/20.   If you haven’t already received your logon details, please contact Diana Mosley as soon as possible so that you can be set up on the system(s).  Your certificates will need to be brought with you on the first day of your induction.

Car Parking

On your first day, it may be as well to park offsite until you arrange to get your free of charge  parking permit from Facilities and your scratch cards (costing 80p per day) from Cashiers.

Leavers’ Survey

Please be good enough to complete a leavers’ survey before leaving CUH. You may hand it in to Aqsa or Diana before you depart. This helps us to maintain or even improve upon the services we offer.
